The Land Transportation Office is now looking at requiring e-Trikes that go
on national and other public roads to be registered.
The LTO is also eyeing licenses to operate them, according to LTO Chief
Vigor Mendoza II.
Already officials of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the
Department of Transportation have begun meeting to discuss what to do about
e-trike users causing chaos on national roads.
The discussions revolve around existing laws, policies, guidelines,
ordinances and programs on electric vehicles at both national and local
government levels.
Motorists have been complaining about e-trike users, ignoring traffic
lights, going against traffic, violating all sorts of traffic regulations
with impunity.
Authorities have also noted the rise in the number of accidents involving
e-trikes while causing congestion and slowing down
Meanwhile, local government units have begun taking measures to address the
problems including apprehending and impound e-trikes that are used as
public transport.
In a press conference MMDA Chairman Romando Artes noted LGU's actions in
trying to solve the e-trike problem with ordinances, regulations, and
programs concerning e-vehicles.
He said these ordinances and regulations will be reconciled with policies
of the national government.
There is really a need for authorities to begin reining in wayward e-trike
users as they not only cause traffic congestion but also endanger
motorists, pedestrians, and themselves.
